It’s a longstanding goal in AI research and a staple of futurist predictions. Until recently, AGI was largely theoretical, but the rapid progress in large language models and other AI in the 2020s has made many experts believe human-level AI might emerge within this decade. In fact, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, suggests AGI could be “five to ten years away,” though he cautions it must be developed responsibly to be beneficial.

Meta’s AI roots. Meta’s foray into AI began long before the current AGI buzz. The company established Facebook AI Research (FAIR) in 2013 with an open research mission “to understand intelligence… and make machines more intelligent”. Over the past decade, Meta’s AI teams (now just Meta AI) have contributed heavily to the field – from developing the popular PyTorch deep learning framework, to breakthroughs in computer vision and language translation. This open-science culture laid a foundation for Meta’s current strategy of open-sourcing AI models. As Zuckerberg noted, Meta “build[s] what we want, and then we open-source it so other people can use it too”. Early on, much of Meta’s AI work was behind the scenes, powering content ranking or moderation on Facebook and Instagram. But by 2022–2023, the generative AI revolution (sparked by models like GPT-3 and ChatGPT) spurred Meta to ramp up its public efforts in AI, both in research and consumer products.

From narrow AI to general AI. The evolution of Meta’s AI research mirrors the wider shift from narrow to more general systems. In fact, Zuckerberg described AI and the metaverse as Meta’s two defining technology bets. While the metaverse vision has a longer horizon, AI is already transforming Meta’s core products and infrastructure. The ultimate goal, as Zuckerberg publicly stated, is generative AI everywhere and eventually general intelligence that can power a multitude of applications.

In sum, Meta enters the AGI race with a strong R&D legacy, a commitment to openness, and a massive platform of billions of users on which to deploy AI assistants. But can an AI born out of a social media company truly compete with dedicated AI labs in reaching AGI? To answer that, let’s look at the current state of Meta’s AI efforts and what exactly Meta’s approach entails.

Current State of Meta’s AI Efforts

As of 2025, Meta has rapidly expanded its AI capabilities and begun rolling them out at an unprecedented scale. A few years ago, Meta was not seen as a leader in generative AI – the spotlight was on OpenAI’s GPT series or Google’s Transformer models. That changed when Meta released LLaMA, a series of large language models, and embraced an open release strategy. And rather than building AI in a vacuum, Meta is integrating AI deeply into its existing products and social graph. Let’s break down the key elements of Meta’s strategy:

1. Open-Source and Collaboration: Meta strongly believes that making AI models openly available will spur innovation and lead to better outcomes. Zuckerberg has noted that 2023 saw open-source models rapidly catch up with closed models, and that “this would be the year open source generally overtakes closed source as the most used models”. By open-sourcing LLaMA models (under a permissive license) and sharing research, Meta effectively outsources some development to the global community. On safety, Google/DeepMind are vocal about ethical AI as well; DeepMind’s CEO Hassabis has warned against “moving fast and breaking things” with AI.
